India Health sector has reached another landmark following the successful surgery which gave 30 year old, Manu, a new pair of hands.
According to Dr Subramania Iyer, Professor and
Head of the Plastic Surgery Department at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in the south-western city of Cochi, the surgery lasted for 16 hours and involved up to 20 surgeons
Manu lost both of his hands in a train accident. He is the first in India to receive a double hand transplant. The hands used for the transplant came from a victim of a traffic accident. Manu is said to be adapting well to the new hands
Since hand transplant started in France, there had been up to 110 successful hand transplants.
