Vitamin A Prevents Malaria in Children

According to a research by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, published in eLife(journal), a single large dose of Vitamin A could prevent malaria in children under 5 years by 54%. This is for regions under Sub-Sahara Africa like Nigeria.

vitamin A can reduce malaria in children

They recommended
that the Vitamin A should be given especially during the rainy season when most mosquitos have malaria. "Our research found that children who received vitamin A supplementation were less likely to become infected with malaria. Now we need to test vitamin A in a randomized controlled clinical trial to better understand whether this could really be an effective way to prevent this disease."Hollm-Delgado a researcher said

She and her colleagues analyzed four sub-Saharan countries Burkina Faso, Mozambique, Rwanda and Senegal on more than 6,100 children between the ages of 6 and 59 months and found that only vitamin A was protective against the disease.

Liver

The researchers aren't certain why vitamin A would reduce the rate of malaria infection, but they suspect it is because vitamin A, which is known to boost immunity, and improve the ability to fight off infection, may help the body clear out the malaria parasite more quickly.

How Deadly is Malaria?

World Health Organisation projects that malaria leads at least 7% of children below five years. Malaria is much more prominent in Sub Saharan Africa
countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and Tanzania. WHO collaborate with African countries in providing mosquito treated nets against mosquito. Malaria has no vaccine yet.
